Radio Ferrymead
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: | If I became a member of the Society, what benefits would I receive for the $20.00 Annual Subscription? |
A: | You would be supporting the station, get free admission for your immediate family to Ferrymead Heritage Park, receive the Society’s quarterly Newsletter, and have speaking and voting rights at the General Meetings. |
Q: | Why doesn’t Radio Ferrymead broadcast in FM? |
A: | Our existing equipment is built for AM, the frequency that was in use throughout New Zealand before the advent of FM. The AM signal also travels further and is in keeping with Radio Ferrymead being a nostalgia station. |
Q: | I live in Canterbury, but I can’t get Radio Ferrymead. Can you tell me why? |
A: | Our transmitter emits with 1 kw of power but you may live in an area that is shadowed from our transmitter or in a building which is constructed with a high proportion of steel. |
Q: | Why don’t you play any modern music? |
A: | We are a nostalgia music station and our charter requires us to play nostalgic music, i.e., music which was recorded up to the end of the production of long-play vinyl records. |
Q: | Are any of the Radio Ferrymead staff on a salary or retainer? |
A: | No. Every member of the Society is a volunteer. |
Q: | I would like to make a monetary donation to Radio Ferrymead. Is your society an accredited charitable organisation for tax purposes? |
A: | Yes, it is. Our official address is on our Membership Application Form. |
Q: | You play great music from Friday afternoon until Monday evening. Why don’t you play music during the rest of the week, computer-recorded or not? |
A: | It would cost our Society more in broadcasting fees and require a greater number of volunteers to maintain continuity. |
Q: | Why are your radio studio and sound museum located so far from the central Heritage Park? |
A: | Our location previously was a prime site at the entrance to Ferrymead Heritage Park, close to the Tram Barn. However, since the main entrance was moved, it has placed us almost a kilometre away from the Heritage Park centre, but the tram still visits our area. A new site and building proposal has been made and as soon as agreement is reached, building design, construction and fund raising will commence. |
