New Announcer

An American, or as he likes to be known, ‘a Kiwi with an American accent,’ Mike immigrated to New Zealand three years ago.

Mike was born in Illinois, on a farm near Chicago and, although he loved country life, he decided a university degree and a tour in the US Navy was the thing to do. Thank goodness, he did, because it brought him to New Zealand in 1969 as a pilot for Operation Deep Freeze in Antarctica. It was in our beautiful city of Christchurch where he met and married his wife, Julia. Together they moved around the world and throughout the United States during his career in the Navy. Following his retirement from military service in 1994, Mike became an insurance broker. In 2006, he and Julia decided retirement in New Zealand sounded perfect.

The couple now live in Sumner. They have one daughter, Caroline, who lives and works in Wellington, and a Portuguese Water Dog, “Otter”, who just happens to be a cousin of “Bo” Obama.

Mike and Julia keep very busy. Both are avid golfers. While Julia loves gardening and tennis, Mike loves to cook and has just taken up bridge. They cherish their family and friends here in New Zealand.

It was an interest in music from the 50’s and 60’s era that brought Mike to Ferrymead Radio. He is pleased that he is able to share music from the past that appeals to the Ferrymead Radio audience.

Planned New RPS Building

Architect's concept sketch of the new building to house the RPS' Museum, Broadcasting Studios, and Workshop, expected to be completed mid-year. The building will be located in the Ferrymead Heritage Park Township.

Interested?

We are looking for a few volunteers to join and become involved in our Radio Preservation Society. If you enjoy the history of radio, music, or things technical, whether you are male of female, we may be able to use your skills in our Society. It may be with the Dini display of early music players and gramophones, telephone answering, radio presenting, or in our radio recycling and technical workshops.

If you have an interest in any of these areas, please use the RPS Membership Application Form on the MEMBERSHIP page on this website and send it to The Secretary, Radio Preservation Society, P.O. Box 19090, Woolston, Christchurch 8241.
